Borderlands weapons introduction

At last count Gearbox declared over 17.5 million weapons in Borderlands. Now have your pick.

The weapons in Borderlands are incredible, and finding the same one twice is often a heavy chore. Each weapon has the chance to have explosive, caustic, incendiary or shock attacks. Weapons with these elemental abilities deal an extra amount of damage, and also have the chance to continually deal damage (I think the higher the multiplier, the better chance to light them on fire or corrode them...) to the enemy. Incendiary weapons are meant for flesh, shock for shields and caustic for armour.

It may not sound it, but the hardest thing about Borderlands is probably deciding on your weapons. At the start your backpack can only carry 12 items, so be prepared to compare guns stat by stat quite often. Considering you also need to carry class mods, shields and health packs, you will find yourself "full" nearly every adventure.

The guns in borderlands are divided into weapon types, these include: shotguns, pistols, combat rifles, snipers, sub machine guns, launchers and Eridian (alien) weapons. However, two guns being classified in the same group does not necessarily mean that they will perform in a similar way. For example, you can find a repeater (normal pistol) that shoots really fast, has a massive clip and has double melee damage, or a revolver that has just 2 bullets but insanely high damage, causes explosions as well as a scope for sniping. Each weapon class has it's ups and downs, and most have a corresponding character. During the loading screen, one line tips are present at the bottom. One of these tips states that each make/brand if gun is more likely to raise certain stats/elemental effects.

Weapon manufacturers.

Atlas – best manufacturer, good all around.
Dahl – low recoil, decent damage.
Eridians – alien weaponry, high damage, unlimited (regenerating) ammo.
Hyperion – long range scopes, high accuracy.
Jakobs – high damage.
Mailwan – elemental damage (every weapon).
S&S munitions – extended magazines, elemental damage.
Tediore – fast reload.
Torgue – all round, not as good as Atlas.
Vladof – fast fire rate, extended magazines.
Gearbox – special easter egg items.

ClipperNow you’ve read this much about guns, so surely you want to know the coolest of them and what they do. Okay, so some weapons come with a “special effect”. Only a small amount of time will this effect be directly written (i.e +100% melee damage on the Clipper). A special effect will be written in red, and often funny or a quote from something. Another weapon with a special effect is Leviathan, which shoots rockets that arc rather than shoot straight. The result is a launcher that is harder to master, but can take out enemies behind cover.

Each weapon has a simple way of determining how rare it is, with200px-Rarety 5 basic levels. White being the most common, then going through in the order, green, blue, purple and orange. I say 5 basic levels because the orange section is actually composed of 3 colours. Most people report finding 1 of the orange guns each play through, making the top tier (dark orange) very sought after.

Borderlands character introduction

You start off the game on a bus and you are introduced to our 4 characters.

soldier
Roland, the soldier. Special ability is Scorpio Turret. Roland can deploy a turret to kill enemies, and with skill points, regenerate health, regenerate ammo, shoot missiles and even revive fallen team mates in the vicinity.

hunter
Mordecai, the hunter. Special ability is Bloodwing. Mordecai can summon a bird that attacks enemies for you.

siren
Lilith, the siren. Special ability is Phasewalk. Lilith can enter an alternate dimesion in which she can move faster and damage enemies when she exits.

brickBrick, the berserker. Special ability is Berserk. Brick temporarily enters a state in which he only uses his fists, but with great damage and he also has rapid health regeneration in "berserk" mode.

> If it is you first time to the game, and you are looking for an easier character, I recommend Roland, as getting out of a sticky situation can simply being deploying your turret. If you upgrade the turret (including the cool down options) you will have "another soldier on the field".

Red Perks

stopping-powerstopping-power-pro

Stopping Power Pro > 250 kills using stopping power to unlock pro
Stopping Power - 40% extra damage
Stopping Power Pro - extra vehicle damage

Stopping Power (SP) is generally the most used red perk. It is useful on all guns but the unsilenced WA2000 and magnum. On the FAL it allows for head shots within range. On all other guns it requires 1 less bullet to kill, either within range, out of range or both, with some obvious exceptions (snipers). SP Pro is pretty much useless as air support takes a long time to kill with bullets, launchers + cold blooded is the way to go.

lightweightlightweight-pro

Lightweight Pro > sprint 30 miles using lightweight to unlock pro
Lightweight > 7% speed increase (patched from 10%)
Lightweight Pro > quick aim down sights after sprinting

90% of the time you see a Lightweight (LW) class, it will be a tactical knifer. This is supposedly the reason for the 3% decrease. Ignoring knife classes, LW is useful but in limited situations. It is hard to justify using LW when it is up against SP and CB. That being said, it can be incredibly useful in objective games, capture the flag specifically. LW pro? eh, never really noticed much difference but hey, you might! Oh, and you will be sprinting for a long time to finish the challenges.

cold-bloodedcold-blooded-pro

Cold Blooded Pro > Destroy 40 enemy kill streaks using cold blooded to unlock pro
Cold Blooded > undetectable by UAVs, thermal and air support
Cold Blooded Pro > crosshairs not red and no name visible when targeted

Cold Blooded is easily one of the most useful perks in the game for multiple reasons. It is the perfect weapon to take down air support, say goodbye to enemies getting more than 5 kills on the chopper gunner. Paired with a silencer and ninja you are completely invisible, so every time you come across an enemy it is a complete surprise to them. However compared to an unsilenced weapon with SP, the range and damage is considerably lower. CB pro, once again not all that helpful, but occasionally it will come in handy. Both the name and red cross hairs only come up at close range so it will only help if you are invisible i.e prone in a bush or something.

danger-closedanger-close-pro

Danger Close Pro > 100 explosive kills using danger close to unlock pro
Danger Close > extra explosives damage
Danger Close Pro> extra air support damage

First of all, this is mainly a perk use for fun. You know that annoying feeling when an explosive gets a hit marker but no kill? Pretty much gone. The downside being that unless you have an um… appropriate class, it will only give your nade a boost. Hmm, an assault rifle with grenade launcher attached, secondary RPG (thumper if not unlocked), any equipment, SoH (if you die often) or scavenger (unlimited explosives!). Green perk doesn't matter. Prepare to get yelled at, enemies don’t really like explosives much. Danger close pro only effects certain situations, such as the AT-4 against harriers.

hardline-prohardline

Hardline > 40 hardline kill streaks to unlock pro
Hardline > kill streaks require one less kill
Hardline Pro > death streaks require one less kill

Pretty simple, each kill streak comes one kill earlier. To be honest I only find it worth using with a 2 (UAV), 3 (care package) and 4 (predator). Getting a UAV every second kill is pretty awesome. Hardline pro is once again useless, who wants death streaks, I swear they make you play worse.

Blue perks

sleight-of-handsleight-of-hand-pro

Sleight of Hand Pro > 120 kills using sleight of hand to unlock pro
Sleight of Hand > 50% reload speed
Sleight of Hand Pro > faster aiming down sights

Sleight of Hand (SoH) is useful on just about any class, and if you ever can’t decide, this is the perfect choice. Reloading in half the time means you can always have a full mag, but can sometimes lead to careless ammo consumption. Consider using it if you plan to be around the enemy a lot, as multiple foes won’t be a problem. For the ultimate combination, unlock extended magazines and you’ll be able to slaughter the other team seven times over… maybe. SoH pro lets you aim down the sights faster, who enjoys quick scoping? (not me) Well this is he perk you need. SoH pro can be useful, mainly for a run and gunner, because at range or if you are stationary you normally have plenty of time to look down the sights and aim..

marathonmarathon-pro

Marathon Pro > sprint a marathon (26 miles) to unlock pro
Marathon > unlimited sprint
Marathon Pro > climb obstacles faster

This is the replacement for Extreme Conditioning, and it has definitely improved. Instead of double you know have unlimited sprint. Paired with lightweight, marathon will have you behind any lines before first blood. This means you can take enemies by surprise very early in the game, giving you a chance to get some kill streaks. If you are playing objective based game modes, marathon is a must, assuming you are going to cap/bomb run. Marathon pro is very helpful in certain maps, such as Favela, in which you will be climbing a lot. You can be very sneaky and quick if you have marathon pro.

one-man-armyone-man-army-pro

One Man Army Pro > 120 kills using one man army to unlock pro
One Man Army > change classes on the go, takes 5 seconds, replaces secondary
One Man Army Pro > quicker class swapping, replaces secondary

To be honest I have only use One Man Army (OMA) a couple of times, I just find it a hassle to wait five seconds while you could be setting up your next kill. That being said, a lot of people like it and it does have a few unique uses. Stacking up equipment or infinite noob tubes is doable, though perhaps frowned upon. OMA pro cuts down the time it takes to change classes, so it is 2-3 seconds.

scavengerscavenger-pro

Scavenger Pro > resupply 100 times while using scavenger to unlock pro
Scavenger > resupply from dead enemies
Scavenger Pro > extra magazines

Scavenger takes bandoliers spot, and like marathon, it has been greatly improved. Although you don’t unlock extra mags until pro, it essentially the option you use if you find you’re running low on ammo a lot. Each time you pick up a scavenger pack you will receive ammo, grenades (equipment/launcher) and secondary ammo. If the enemy has a lot of air support in the sky, scavenger and a stinger go well together. Another thing, if you plan on using claymores or C4, definitely use scavenger. Each time one blows up you have another, and people keep coming back for revenge. Scavenger pro is pretty simple start with a LOT more ammo.

blingbling-pro

Bling Pro > get 200 kills using a blinged weapon to unlock pro
Bling > two primary weapon attachments
Bling Pro > two secondary attachments

Pretty simple, allows you to have two attachments on you primary weapon. If you’re not comfortable with the iron sights of a gun but want a stealth class, perfect. Red dot/holographic/ACOG/thermal with a silencer. Iron sights are easy, going ultra stealthy. Silencer + heartbeat sensor. You can make so many different combinations that is always has it use. Once you unlock pro you have a new range of attachments to pick from. Just please, go easy on the 1887 bling.

Borderlands - Advance Tips Guide

Some more tips on Borderlands are below. These tips are more specific and do not fall under the basic tips guide.

Again I would like to thank Kad.

They are a little bit all over the place but that does not mean that they are not very helpful.

-There are 160 missions total. 30 are main plot Missions, completing these will beat the game.

-In New Haven there is a secret weapons vendor across from the weapons vendor that is already there it opens after you have killed Krom and it will be almost directly behind you when standing in front of the weapons vendor. The weapons are generally better.

-In the second play through you can do the claptrap missions again. If you get a grenade mod as a reward reload and do it again until you get a backpack mod. Its a small chance but it is well worth it.

-Item drops are completely random but the more players you have in the game the better the equipment this includes stores.

-Don't waste your time looting chests and reloading the game. Killing end game beasts are way more effective and net you valuable proficiency experience. So loot wherever you want but then kill the last area enemies.

-Don't waste your time power leveling unless you have already beat the game. Not only does it take away from the fun but it is worthless because your weapons will still suck for your level and you will die and lose more money than you would if you were at the right level. Only power level if you have maxed out a char and want to play with the other chars. Cause then you can skim through the plot missions and get better weapons faster.

-Old Haven, Trash Coast and The Promontory are the best places for looting. Trash Coast is only good on your way to the hive otherwise get the fuck out unless your killing the mini bosses too for quest items on the second play through after you beat it.

-From the last tip. If you beat the second play through then you can go back and kill the bosses for the quest items you would have received. E.g. kill scar for T.K.s wave with a small chance of scar dropping it at a level 48 cap.

-Don't waste time pondering weapon choices and don't hold onto higher level weapons. The weapon you have been using for a while is usually just fine. At least you know what it does and many others that are better than it will soon fall too your feet. Then start nitpicking sell the weapons for money. Don't waste your money on anything with one really good exception and that is you haven't seen anything better in like 4 hours of game play. Unless its a shield or class mod they are so hard to find. Trust me you need serious money to buy the last level ammo upgrades and they are totally worth it.

-Many quest items will carry you through much of the game. For example a hunter using the elephant gun can go very far if he has the sniper upgrades. If you have it you should just use it and save the money. In the example above you don't have a scope but does it really matter if you one shot kill everything.

-Look at all the stats before you invest in a single tree. If you invest in a stat it is better to max it out. For example the soldier class has a refire skill which every 2 seconds will remove 1 second from the cooldown of your turret at level 1. At Level 5 its 5 seconds. Pretty good when combined with the level 5 cooldown reduction skill which reduce the cooldown time of the turret by 100% making it only 50 seconds instead of 100 seconds to throw it out. The two skill are in different trees but combining them makes a powerful duo causing your turret to comes out maybe every 20 seconds in a fire fight. I think that's pretty good.

Borderlands - Boss Tips

Below is some tips to take out some of the bosses in Borderlands.
I hope this helps, I did not write all of these and would like to pass some of the credit to Kad.

KILLING NINE-TOES(and his 3 balls)
-Attack him with your fastest firing, most accurate weapon
-kill him quick enough and the skags wont be a problem
-Take too long and u get attacked by 2 strongs skags and nine-toes... don't take too long

KILLING SLEDGE
-He has a shot gun stay away from him.
-His Melee is very strong stay further away
-Go through the left Door
-Shoot him in the face for crits and a fast kill
-Static weapons or a static artifact will kill that hefty shield of his fast but after that change to a normal weapon or a fire weapon for the killing shots.

KILLING MAD MEL
-Drive in with a rocket runner, lock onto the outlanders and drive in circles trying to crush the non-vehicle units that spawn. Just keep Firing and then lock onto the next outlander vehicle.
-When you die and respawn as most people do hopefully u have killed all the walking lackeys just run to the edge of the ramp but don't jump down. Fire away and hide when your shield drops. Congrats you win.

KILLING KROM
-Just run to each safe point. I generally go left first and up and around.
-If he is in his turret then hide and kill his goombas.
-If not get up there and fire away just make sure u stay near a hiding spot just in case.

KILLING BARON FLYNT
-Pretty straight forward kill his goons.
-2 very powerful unique goons attack. One Melee and one range shoot them in the face to crits and stay away. You cant snipe them too well because they are fast so use an smg or revolver or rifle.
-Baron himself is a jerk. Strong shield and strong gun. Its a shotgun type weapon but he is easier to snipe than his unique goons are. If all else fails shoot him and pray hes dead before u bleed to death.

KILLING RAKK HIVE
-Easiest boss around lots of health with weak rakks to boot. Shoot him in the eyes for crits
-If u get low on ammo collect some from the rakks.
-Stay away from it :)
- Rakk that will periodically swoop down at you, be on the lookout for this.

Mothrakk
-To kill the Mothrakk just jump in a machine gun runner, jump out, light the 3 torches, jump in, lock on and fire away while driving in circles. Everyone has problems with this guy but hes uber easy when you fight him as described above.
-There is also a nearby 'Catch A Ride' station that you can hide under for cover.

KILLING DESTROYER
-The large tentacles are pretty much useless don't worry about them.
-The smaller tentacles have a be bulbous area shoot it to kill them ASAP.
-When he flicks his tongue out shoot him in the mouth for crits.
-When he charges his eye run for cover
-The blue/purple tentacles will always kill you if you aren't careful

Borderlands - Basic Tips Guide

Hey all I thought I would chuck up a simple basic tips guide for Borderlands. Nothing too deep just some things that everyone can use whether you're a pro or not. We will be putting some more in depth guides for borderlands up later including a Skagzilla how to.

These are in no particular order.

  • Always keep an eye on your health, it can be very frustrating having to repeat half the quest again if you have died multiple times.
  • Constantly use your special ability when suitable, you can gain a huge advantage over your opponents by using your special ability.
  •  Take advantage of the elemental damage that your weapons do, shock damage takes out shields incredibly quickly.
  • Critical hits. Work out the critical spot on each of your enemy's and you will be taking them out so much quicker. The Badass creatures can be taken out a lot easier if you know where to shoot them.
  • The markers that lead you to your quest objective are not always dead on accurate, in a lot of cases there is a small radius around the waypoint that needs to be searched. Sometimes when looking for hidden objectives you need to be creative, ex. Looking up on top of buildings and not just on the ground or in trash can.
  • Broken Claptrap quests give +3 bag slot items. If you collect them all you will get 42 slots in total and an achievement.
  • When you have spare cash make sure you upgrade and fill all your ammo allocations so if you run out ammo for your preferred weapon and aren't near a shop you can still defend yourself with something you have picked up. Keep buying ammo to complete the buying items challenge, as it is an easy and quite cheap way to get experience as well as keeping you well armed.
  • As you complete missions check if you have any others in the area that you can complete do so you don't have to keep going back, this saves an incredible amount of time, you can finish multiple missions and register completion of all of them at the same time.
  • There are quite literally millions of different guns in Borderlands. If you are not using a weapon all the time sell it to keep the slot open, as you progress in the game you will always pick up something to equal or better it and there is a experience challenge for selling items as well.
  • Sometimes more powerful weapons are not better, reload speed and rate of fire count for a lot and the more bullets you can fire the more damage you can do.
  • You can take cars through the portal areas. This took a surprising amount of time to work out...
  • Every time you restart the game, any lockers/bins/toilets etc are filled backup with cash/ammo. This also goes for the major bosses, if you want to get some good rare items or just some extra xp this works well.

Thanks to everyone who else who helped accumulate the list. I will add to it more and more as I think of new ones.

Be sure to check out the rest of the site.
